Gypsy and Traveller communities experience some of the most significant mental health inequalities in the UK. Gypsy and Traveller people have been found to be nearly three times more likely to experience anxiety and more than twice as likely to experience depression than the general population. Evidence also indicates particularly high rates of suicide among Irish Travellers, with suicide prevalence reported as six times higher for Irish Traveller women and seven times higher for men than the general population in an All-Ireland study.
Despite this, Gypsy and Traveller people can face significant barriers to accessing appropriate mental health support, including stigma, poor cultural understanding, literacy and digital exclusion, inconsistent services and a lack of trust. Drawing on current research and the experiences of the communities, this webinar explores these inequalities and shares how mental health services can become more accessible, culturally responsive and trauma-informed.
