Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller people have experienced discrimination and hate crime for generations and remain some of the most marginalised ethnic groups in the UK.
Research has consistently demonstrated that Romany Gypsies and Irish Travellers are the most negatively viewed ethnic groups in the UK. Despite this, many incidents go unreported due to the normalisation of discrimination, a lack of confidence that action will be taken, and a mistrust of public authorities.
Drawing on decades of campaigning, advocacy, and frontline casework, Friends, Families and Travellers invites you to join this practical webinar to understanding, recognising and responding to hate crime affecting Gypsy and Traveller communities.
In this 2-hour session, we will explore:
- The legal protections available under the Equality Act 2010, including the ethnic status of Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller communities.
- The difference between prejudice, discrimination, hate incidents and hate crime.
- The realities and impact of anti-Gypsy and Irish Traveller racism.
- Supporting victims, reporting incidents and safeguarding.
- Online hate crime and effective responses.
- How to be an ally and promote inclusive practice.
This session will include interactive polls, group discussions and will conclude with a Q&A session.
Through real-life case studies and practical examples, participants will explore how to apply this knowledge in real-world situations. While centred on Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller people, the learning is relevant to improving responses to hate experienced by all marginalised groups.
The session will give participants a stronger understanding of the responsibilities they may have and the practical steps they can take when someone experiences discrimination or hate. This can help staff feel more confident supporting individuals, recording and reporting incidents appropriately, and challenging discriminatory behaviour rather than allowing it to go unaddressed.
