Hate Crime and Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller People

Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller people have experienced discrimination and hate crime for generations and remain some of the most marginalised ethnic groups in the UK.

Research has consistently demonstrated that Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller communities are the most negatively viewed ethnic groups in the UK. Despite this, many incidents go unreported due to the normalisation of discrimination, a lack of confidence that action will be taken, and a mistrust of public authorities.

Drawing on decades of campaigning, advocacy, and frontline casework, Friends, Families and Travellers invites you to join this practical webinar to understanding, recognising and responding to hate crime affecting Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller communities.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the webinar, participants will:

• Know the legal protections available under the Equality Act 2010, including the ethnic status of Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller communities.
• Understand the difference between prejudice, discrimination, hate incidents and hate crime.
• Have a better understanding of the realities and impact of anti-Gypsy and Irish Traveller racism.
• Understand how best to support Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller people and report incidents.
• Explore how to be an ally and promote inclusive practice.
